Chord shapes are essentially the root construct of all chords on a guitar. Some are repeatable in other places on the fret board. Learning new chords throughout the fretboard is really important, as everyone knows. But do you really know what are you playing?
Each and every finger that you are pressing, including the open strings, of course, should be memorized, including the degree of the chord that is being played. Is it 3rd? The Root? The 13th? These notes help create the chord shapes that can be moveable or repeated in other positions on the fret board. And so on…
Having that information will give you a great advantage if you would like to create more chords with the same shape just by moving one finger.
Here is an example of a very common 7th chord shape. Try memorizing the degrees, can you try to find X713?
